As a recording DAW you can try REAPER (http://www.reaper.fm).

Reaper is a professional recoding DAW with anything in it and supports both MAC & PC. It's one of the most powerful tools with free updates (also when you're not a registered user)
It also supports VST - VSTi- DX - DXi - AU - AUi as plug-ins and WAV - MP3 - FLACC and other audio formats as well.
No need to say that I use Reaper for years now and don't want anything else anymore!!!

A good alternative for a VST plug-in is the VSamp (http://www.vsamp.com).
It's free to download and try but registered users can also download many soundfiles (VSamp uses his own extensions) and the half of them sounds good. You can also use the VSamp as stand alone player together with a midi keyboard and make your own soundfiles to use them in the future.

editing capabilities

The editing capabilities are a bit different for the MAC or PC version. Originally Reaper was made for PC I suppose and the editing capabilities are much better there than with MAC. Due to a great latency using my PC laptop in my new home studio I got hooked up with MAC now and I'm still learning but I noticed that it's more difficult with MAC than on the PC version for some reason. I have no idea how it goes with protools so it's difficult to compare but let's say that when you're used to DAW recorders you can work with Reaper in no time. Another good thing in Reaper is that when it becomes critical using many VST - DXI or AU plug-ins you can freeze the track like you set it and a WAV file of that track will be made including all the effects and effects so that the CPU power increases and you have more power for the other tracks. When it comes to the final mix and you're not totally satisfied of a frozen track you can also unfreeze and edit it further till it's O.K.

Hi Johan and thank you for sharing your insight about Reaper and Vsamp.
I don't know much about them but I heard some good things here and there, and you confirmed.
What can you tell us about editing capabilities of Reaper compared to other DAW you might have tried ? I've been a ProTools user for so many years now that I can't see myself be as efficient with another software but as soon as I can I'll test it and probably make a review (or if you want to do it, you're most welcome ;-)
Vsamp seems to be nice too, I'll give it a try !
